A note from PTA:

5th Grade Day is coming up on May 15th.

We still do not have a chair for this event.  As of right now, Laurie & Denise (PTA Co-Pres) are temporarily filling in until others step forward to head up the planning of this event and the fundraiser that go along with it.

We have several that said they'd like to help and they will be contacted shortly.  If you are a 5th Grade Parent & would like to help (even if you've already filled out a sheet from your teacher) please email Laurie & Denise and let them know.  We don't want anyone to miss out.

Updates and homework

Today was a little odd.  There were five students absent today.  That, along with Target leaving, left me with nine to eleven students at any given time throughout the day.

In writing, I allowed everyone to finally finish their informational writing piece.  Those that had finished early were previewed quotation marks, leading up to fictional writing.

We went to the library today, and were also introduced our new spelling words for the week: record, copy, forest, especially, and necessary.

In math we previewed exponents and order of operations.  Remember Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally?

We also got to watch a video stream about how the Internet has changed over the past few years from an "information-gathering resource" to an "information-communicating network."  Research was once the primary use for the internet, especially for education.  Now, and even more so in the near future, the internet is used to gather, share, collaborate with, and communicate about that same information.  The internet has become two-way.

I do want to forewarn you.  The video did mention such sites as YouTube and FaceBook.  I am not promoting either of those sites even though I do use them personally.  I do believe, and I did express this to the students, that these sites as well as internet use in general should be left up to the parents.  I do believe that the internet will be used more and more as a communication tool within education, not just a research resource.

Tonights Homework:

Math website: http://www.harcourtschool.com/menus/math2004/ga/math2004_gr5.html  Review chapters 9-10, and look over chapter 11

Other Reminders:

Chik-fil-a biscuits will be sold in the car-pool line tomorrow morning.

Hi Touch Hi Tech permission forms need to be turned in along with the $8 the 25th.

We are running short on supplies.  If everyone could donate a pack of paper, a box of pencils, and a glue stick; we should be fine for the rest of the year.

As always, thank you for all that you do.

What is Love? Baby, don't hurt me!

Tomorrow, we will be celebrating Valentine's Day. We will be exchanging cards and candy. I have one rule: what you do for one, you do for all. We will also be having a Valentine's Day card/candy box contest. I did not really give any parameters, but most students have done something like this before. Just take a shoe box and decorate it. Be creative, and as long as it is school appropriate, I say go for it.

I told them they could go to this instead of their 30 minutes of writing. They may watch the video and/or do the interactive activities found in the tab at the top of the screen or on the right of the screen.

I hope you and yours have a wonderful Valentine's Day weekend.

Talent Show Tonight

I wanted to send a reminder out that tonight is Varner's talent show.  It will be held at the PAC building at McEachern High School, starting at 6:00 pm and ending somewhere around 9:00 pm.  Three students from Mr. Stone's class along with many other 5th graders will be performing.

Monday, we will be reviewing for our Chapter 10 post test in Math, which will be held on Tuesday.

New Behavior Cards were sent out today.  Please look over and discuss with your students.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Inauguration Day

As you know, today was Inauguration Day.  Even though this was a historical day, it was still a day of learning.  We did in fact watch the inauguration; the swearing in, the address, the songs, poems, and the other "pomp and circumstance" that went along with the day.  Along with that, we did other things as well.  We practiced dividing decimals with long division.  We introduced this weeks spelling words and found their "variations."  We looked up synonyms of the key words of the "Presidential Oath."  We also did research on one former president and also on Pres. Obama.  That brings me to tonight's homework.  Students can do either the traditional homwork for the night, which is read 30 minutes and write a paragraph with this week's spelling words.  Or they can continue their research on their presidents.

www.history.com

Go to "Aerican Presidents" on the front menu, click on your president, read through the biography, timeline, and open up the videos. You may have to type in your president's name in the search bar if none appears right away.

If you do not have internet access at home, you can just do the traditional assignment.  Students are to bring their findings back to school tomorrow and we will compare and contrast.

Remember that next week is conference week.  I need to make an apointment with you if I haven't already.  There are some new spaces available due to reschedulings.  Next week will also be an "early release" week.

Take this evening to speak with your children of the significance of the day, no matter what your political views may be.

8:00 am: Check In and Registration

8:30: Reindeer Run

8:30 - 2:00: Secret Santa Shop is Open

9:30 - 11:00: Waffle House catered breakfast with Santa

This really is a nice event.  Please come out and support our school community.  I will try to make it on time.  However, I am doing a lock-in at the church the night before so I might be a little late... and tired.

Chains!:  The challenge has been set.  A few of my students have sent in very generous amounts of money for holiday chain links.  The donations will go toward families in need during the holiday season.  My class was very disappointed that we were not in 1st place after today.  So here is my challenge:  I'm taking down the name-tags that are outside my door.  My challenge is to fill up that space with holiday chain links.  They are five for a dollar, or one for a quarter.
