Ga. Drought articles needed

Students who bring in articles from the newspaper, Internet, or magazines will earn extra credit in science.  Also, they will have an opportunity to earn extra credit in reading and language arts.  But they must have at least one article.  If  you find more than one send it for those who can't find any.

We are doing a special science display for the school on Georgia's Drought.

Also we need pictures and maps of the Pacific's -island regions  please send in pictures of Hawaii, Fiji    Islands, and areas of islands in the Pacific.

Homework Changes RECENTLY ADDED INFO

From this point until  school is out- I do not intend to give homework in math unless a person is not completing their classwork.

Students need to study their spelling words for Thursday tests.  Our last spelling test will be Thursday the 15th.

Beginning tomorrow once a student has made their AR goal, they will not need to read their 30 minutes at night homework although I feel it is a good  life long habit.  I try to read the newspaper , my devotion, or part of good novel  daily .

Any books at home should be returned .  I will be collecting them very soon. We have  just a few late library books out as well.  Reminders:   T- shirt forms went home last week.   I estimated the sizes for those who would not turn one in.

The awards assemblies will be held the last day of school for fifth grade.  Although we eat at 10:44 we would like to have a celebration snack around 11:45 for students  and parents of our room.  If a parent can not attend another family member can come.  If any one would like to help , please let me know.

We will have a class awards ceremony around 12:00 and one for the  whole fifth grade around 1:00.  The students will perform the traditional Varner Walk of Honor following the Fifth Grade assembly. Make plans to attend.

Students will be having a fiesta the next time their Spanish class meets which will be next week.  She is asking for donations of  Hispanic type snacks and small treats for the pinata.

GRADE SHEETS WENT HOME THURSDAY.   PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN ASAP. Writing scores are here.  I will send them home on Friday.  I was very proud of our class as a whole.

Evening of the Arts

An invitation was sent home about Evening of the Arts with an envelope.   Wed. April 30th

If you want to buy the picture but can not attend you can return the envelope.  Read the directions  on the invitation.  ALSO.  an invitation for ordering Chick-fil-A went home - Please come if possible .  It is very exciting to see all the framed art from all the students.    You are under no pressure to buy- but  I bought my daughter's  art at her middle school last year.  I do not regret it because now she never has time to draw.   Plus.I didn't have to go get it framed. 

Don't forget Tapp night May 5th  - at Tapp -  important info will be given out

Important Dates

CRCT testing begins this week.  Wed -Friday this week   Reading, Language Arts and Math   BE ON TIME .  Send number two pencils .  If sick,    students must have a written note for an excused absence to make up the tests.

Next week  Mon- Tuesday  Social studies and science 

Reading and math  tests are equivalent to fifth grade graduation tests.     Please send in summer school transportation forms if  you were given them. They will be tossed if your child passes.   This helps secure bus transportation and a place in this area of West Cobb in the event your child has to attend summer school because they do  not pass the  reading or the math tests.     Otherwise, the parent, may have to provide transportation across town to  go to summer school.

May  5th   7-8  Parent /student orientation to Tapp at Tapp.

April 30th  Evening of the Arts 5-8 - A sheet is going home tomorrow on ways you can help earn money for Fifth Grade Day .  The class with the best attendance will receive a Popsicle Party.

Spring Break

A packet was sent home in reading that is required to complete.  It will not take that long if done about thirty minutes for four of the nine days we are off.  This will help them to continue reading  stories similar to what they may have on the CRCT.

Also for extra credit I told students to do any section of their re teach book  in math. Those who have the most done with 80%accuracy will receive a small prize. Study times tables.  I have a very small group who still have not memorized them through 10.  11 and 12 should be done as well.

I Will be available everyday  next week except Wed. and Thursday until 3:00 to help students after school.

My tutoring group should bring their workbooks on Wed. for a celebration and last minute tutoring.

CRCT TESTING BEGINS APRIL 23rd.

Please have a great spring break.  Be careful if you are traveling or home alone. Make smart choices and always be aware of your surroundings.  I can't wait to see you in a week!:)

Study for Science and math

       Memorize the gallon picture.  It will be a math test question.   Do page 425  1-20 as a review.

      Chapter 21 math test is tomorrow.     Use your morning work pretest and chapter 21 to study . Most of the questions will cover  customary capacity and metric capacity. 

Extra Credit flash cards for Chapter 21 are due at test time tomorrow.

Science test will cover information from the chapters.  Many  of the student projects covered the material. We had some elaborate power points and nice presentations on the animal  and plant kingdoms as well as the plant and animal cells.   A41 A39-chart, A47 arre helpful to study.  Study notes taken from the power point

Science notebooks are due after test tomorrow.

Sponge the teacher day is tomorrow .  Students must have a permission slip and money to throw a sponge.

Tests will be Friday

Don't forget -Students  may buy tickets to throw wet sponges at any fifth grade teacher. This event will take place Friday.    1.00 a sponge throw all money raised will go to fund Fifth Grade Day-  The more money raised the better the activities for Fifth Grade Day. We also have a movie day and a hat day coming up after spring break  Info has already gone home.

  No new spelling words this week.  We will do spelling activities with our old words.

We will have a math test on Thursday over Chapter 21 and a simple science test on Thursday over A41 Review questions and A47  Review questions.  Also the chart on A39 is useful to study.

Due to me being sick, I have one more part of last week's math test that I want to review  after going over a packet they did last week.   Then I will have them look back over their answers one last time tomorrow.   I have already told the students how many problems that they have missed on the other two parts of the test. 

Tonight's math homework p.417  1-16 

Monday night students had to draw a chart into their science notebook from A39- pictures extra credit .   They should list another example for  animals and plants.  I will collect notebooks  after the test Thursday.

We went over last night's homework in math-p.413 if you would like to review with them.

Thursday's homework will be p.425   1-20. Please let me know  in writing if your child needs a ruler to take home.

If you have any poetry books at home; discussing what a  stanza is,  what types of figurative language  are used and why the author wrote the poem,  would be great to do as the thirty minutes of reading.  Our Literacy Place Book has some poems to use.

don't forget- a math test on Thursday- I may wait until Friday.    Students must memorize formulas.  They are in the book but   I   gave them a sheet last week.
