Varner Physical Education Program

Varner Physical Education

Dear Varner Families,

The Varner Physical Education Department would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to another exciting new school year. Our staff consists of Sue Mitchell (formerly Sue Jordan), Physical Education Teacher, Maureen Glendon, Physical Education Para pro. We are looking forward to an awesome year at Varner with your children.

A quality physical education program is offered to students as part of the general curriculum at Varner Elementary School. We will be using activities from SPARK Physical Education Program. SPARK (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) of San Diego State University is an "Exemplary Program" of the U.S. Dept. of Education. The curriculum has evolved from National Institutes of Health study; SPARK has been proven effective by objective research and field testing on tens of thousands of elementary age students and their teachers.

It is important to me that every child feels successful each day, and that they leave class eager to have physical education again. That is why I plan to incorporate SPARK's "SEAD" philosophy. Our classes will be Safe, Enjoyable, Active, and Developmentally Appropriate (SEAD).

One of my class goals is to actively engage children in sufficient amounts of moderate to vigorous physical activity to improve and/or maintain their physical health and well being. Another goal is to encourage children to apply the skills and knowledge they acquire during class and to seek opportunities to be active outside of school and as part of a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, instructional units are planned to develop motor, personal, and social skills.

In order to provide the best possible experience for your child, we must all work together as a team! Please remind your child to dress appropriately for physical activity (each day). For comfort and safety purposes, he/she should wear running shoes with rubber soles, and shorts or loose fitting clothing. Running shoes may be kept in their backpack.  PLEASE DO NOT WEAR FLIP FLOPS, SANDALS, CROCS OR BOOTS TO PHYSICAL EDUCATION. Girls need to wear shorts under dresses or skirts to allow more movement. Boys need to have their pants pulled up to their waist with a belt if necessary.

Physical activity must be done regularly to achieve health benefits. Therefore, your child's participation is very important. If she/he is sick or unable to participate in all activities, please let me know via note or phone call prior to the scheduled class. It would be helpful if the note states the specific nature of the ailment and your suggested restrictions. If they are unable to participate for more than 5 days, we will need a doctor’s note. It can be faxed to the school at 770-222-3777. Students may bring a water bottle with water only. Sunscreen everyday is also important!
PLEASE REMIND YOUR CHILDREN, THERE WILL BE NO GUM ALLOWED IN PE.If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at susan.jordan@cobbk12.org.

Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to teach your child.
