JUMP ROPE FOR HEART, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2012

Posted at 08:45 PM | Permalink

We are starting our jump rope unit. We will be starting with the jump stick. A jump stick is about 10 feet long and made of fiberglass. We slide the stick on the floor and the students jump over it. This helps students to learn how to jump straight up and down. We will also be using hula hoops to jump with, jump bands (similar to Chinese jump ropes), individual ropes, long ropes and double dutch ropes.
Please ask your students to tell you about the two kinds of ropes we have and how to measure to make sure we are using the correct size.

During the month of November we finished up our golf unit the first week.
We then did a scooter board unit. We pulled ourselves sitting on the scooter board, we pushed ourselves sitting on the scooter board and we did alligator laying down on our tummies on the scooter board. We also did horse and buggy where one student was the horse holding a rope at their tummy. Their partner was the buggy rider and they sat criss-cross applesauce or indian style on the scooter board holding one end of the rope in each hand. Partner #1 pulled partner #2 about 30 feet where they stopped, switched places and partner #2 would pull partner #1 back to the start. The students continued taking turns finding ways to steer and turn.
On November 17th, we had an incredible Boosterthon Fun Run! Lots of energy from all the students.

This month we finished up fitness testing.
We then introduced The First Tee golf program to Kindergarten and any new students to our school. Our kit includes putters, wedges, golf balls (tennis balls that are smaller in diameter and covered in velcro), and three different targets.
Kindergarten was introduced to the equipment and worked on learning the cue words, how to hold a golf club, rolling and putting the golf ball.
First grade reviewed the equipment and worked on using the cue words, rolling and putting the golf ball.
Second and Third grades reviewed the equipment and worked on using the cue words, putting and chipping the golf ball.
Fourth and Fifth graders reviewed the equipment and used a checklist incorporating the cue words while they putted and chipped the golf ball.
In the spring, we will be outside practicing full swing.

During the month of September, we will be working on our first round of fitness testing. We test in the fall and the spring and take the best score. If you look on the right side of my blog under pages, there is information about both the Presidential Challenge and Fitnessgram.
We are required by the state of Georgia to administer the Fitnessgram. This test also includes for us to weigh and measure height for each student. PLEASE BE ASSURED WE TAKE EVERY MEASURE TO RECORD SCORES CONFIDENTIALLY.
We will be sending home reports about your child's fitness test scores at the end of the school year.
It is VERY important that your children wear tennis shoes and socks during fitness testing. It is ok if they wear other shoes and put their tennis shoes and socks in their backpack.
Weather permitting, we will be running outside the week of September 26th. Please let us know if for any reason your child can not participate.
Kindergarten will be tested on the G-KIDS Gross motor skills listed below.
Thank you for all your support.
