Evening of the Arts at Varner

If you are new to Varner you may not know about Varner's Evening of the Arts which will be on Thursday April 30 this year.  It is like a huge are show with the children's art on display.  Their art even gets framed, although this year they are only framing the art of the students who are going to attend.  Please return the slip saying you will come and check it out.  I always took my Jordan's picture with hers even though we didn't buy it, but if you are interested it will be available for purchase for $29.50.

Mrs. Glover, the art teacher, has even offered an extra art class in clay to the class who has the most members attend art night!

Registration Card/Envelope

I have received most registration cards and manila envelopes back now.  Thank you to everyone who has returned them.  If you have not yet, please check the registration card to make sure that all information is correct, add information where needed, and sign the back of the form.  Please return the card in the envelope.  If you add three stamps to the envelope your child's final report card will be sent to you the week after school is out.  If you choose, you may pick up your child's report card instead.  In this case just don't put stamps on the envelope and it will be waiting for you here in the front office.

New Math Websites Added to Bookmarks Site

I just wanted to let you know that I added some math practice websites to the ikeepbookmarks site.  If you click on math I added a folder titled "Area and Perimeter" and under the space where the folders are listed there are some general math sites.  I really liked both the sites with 5 stars.  I hope these help you with math practice.

Reminders

Students should complete 3 things every night:

1. Read 30 minutes.  The material can be the students own choice.

2. Practice spelling words.  The words are pulled from a bank and are reused.  The children should practice words they have missed in the past in order to spell them correctly next time and in their writing.  Visit http://www.sittonspelling.com/ to learn more about our spelling program.

3. Study multiplication facts.  Most students' brains are at a place where they understand how to multiply and can find the product if they need to, but in the future math will be much easier for the children who can recall the facts with speed.  The children can sing, practice on the Internet (check the ikeepbookmarks site for links), play games, practice with flash cards or any way you choose!  Switch it up and make it fun!

Students can also practice for CRCT online.  Visit http://www.gadoe.org/ci_testing.aspx?PageReq=CI_TESTING_CRCT for a student study guide and a link to the Online Assessment System where students can practice CRCT type questions online.

Doing Our Part

In support of budget cuts made by the state, I will no longer be sending home paper copies of the blog as a newsletter.  Please check the blog periodically for updates and class news.  You will may also notice fewer paper copies of work coming home.  Please be assured that we are working in class!  The students will be practicing hands on and using technology to show their learning and do our part to conserve paper!

Curriculum Topics

In science we are coming to the end of our habitats unit and will begin studying magnets.

Our language arts focus for this 9 weeks is fiction text.  We will focus on the skill of making inferences and predictions and then review summarizing and identifying the main idea.

In math our focus is switching from fractions and decimals to measuring length in customary and metric units and finding the perimeter and area of shapes.

Mrs. Mendenhall will be studying the impact Franklin and Elenore Roosevelt had on our society.

Please let me know if you have any resources to add to our current studies.
