Reading, of course, is fundamental to everything we do. So, the more practice our children get, the more proficient they will become in all of their academic areas. There are many things that we can do to enhance our children’s reading skills.
RAH (Read at Home) Part of the children's daily homework is to read at least 20 minutes a day at home. They are to show this by recording their time and the book on their reading log which should be kept in their agenda notebooks. It is their responsibility to have you sign it each night as acknowledgement that they did read. I calculate their minutes and record them each Friday. I suggest that they "read aloud" to you at least twice a week to build their fluency. Third graders are expected to read about 90 words per minute.
AR (Accelerated Reader) AR is a series of comprehension tests on over 1000 books in our media center. We encourage students to read them and take tests in order to build their comprehension. I ask my students to check out at least one AR book and a "their choice" book. They are able to take tests in the classroom or in the media center. I have also developed an incentive program to "pay off" for their hard work.
It is so easy for students to find an AR (Accelerated Reader) book on their level.
Anytime, anyplace (using a computer with Internet access) students can use Destiny to find a book on their AR (Accelerated Reader) level. They can also use Destiny to search the Internet (for Cobb County approved websites) or do any other activities they can do at school.
