As you probably know, standardized testing begins next week. We will start on Wednesday with the CoGat test that will last for three days. This is a test to measure intelligence through various mini-tests, ie. patterns, number patterns, categorizing, etc. The following Monday, Oct. 10, we will begin the ITBS test, which tests knowledge through reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies. Please make sure your children get a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast.
We will not give homework (except RAH) during the week of ITBS. Because the test takes up more time than the CoGat, we will not assign spelling words that week, either. We need to make sure we are able to get math, reading, writing, and social studies in each day!
Speaking of RAH (Read at Home), there are many children who are not reading each evening. We cannot say enough about how important this is for your child's reading growth. The more they practice, the better they will get. Please make this a prioirity in your child's education growth.
The children continue to excel in writing stories. We are working on a new piece of writing where we narrowed down a topic to a specific event. We are working on writing "Bold Beginnings, Mighty Middles, and Excellent Endings!" If you haven't heard my story, "I was Chased by a Pig Slayer," ask your child. It was fun giving them the story a bit at a time. :) I modeled this story as we worked through the process of developing strong stories. All of the children are in the process of publishing. Mrs. Landmon already has an exciting plan for our next writing adventure.
Well, today was my birthday, and what a fabulous day it was! From cards, to hugs, to brightly colored cupcakes, and a fun, fun "Chicken Dance" card! I don't know how many times we listened and danced to it. I can't remember when I've been treated so special by a class, but then how could I not, with these precious children!
Have a beautiful weekend.
