Week of Nov. 7-11

Dear Parents,

We had such a great time at the Atlanta History Center last Friday!  We toured an 18th century working farm.  We saw demonstrations on how to weave cotton, dip candles, work with metal, play with toys, and make butter.  The students were given an opportunity to try each of these activities themselves.  They had a lot of fun!

This week at Varner, we are having a Boosterthon Pep Rally on Wednesday afternoon.  The Boosterthon FundRun will be next week, on Thursday, November 17th.  This is always a fun time for the students!

Fancy Nancy Day!

Dear Parents,

Fancy Nancy Day was a great success!  Thank you for encouraging your child to dress up last Friday and join in the fun.  They completed many hands-on activities that helped to increase their understanding of synonyms. 

I still need many of the Performing Arts permission slips to be turned in to me.  You do not have to make a donation, but I do need the signed permission slip to let me know if your child has permission to attend the field trip.

Please continue to check the Take Home Folder and planner each night!  It is a fast and easy way for us to keep in touch!

Week of Aug. 22-26, 2011

This week we continued to learn classroom procedures and expectations. We also began our 2nd grade curriculum. Some of the topics we worked on this week are: cardinal directions, data, place value, how to select a book, author's purpose, and punctuation. Please remember to check your child's take home folder and sign the planner each day. Thank you so much for your support!

First Week of School

Dear Parents,

We are off to a great start in 2nd grade! We spent most of this week getting to know each other and learning classroom procedures and expectations. I enjoyed seeing so many of you at Open House!

Progress Reports

Dear Parents,

Progress Reports will be sent home on Tuesday, May 3rd.  Please sign the report and send it back to me.

I am so proud of the progress that your children have made this year.  When I look back at work samples from August, I am reminded of how much they have changed over the months.

The last few weeks of school will go by quickly, so please continue to check your child's agenda and/or read the blog for updates.

Welcome Back from Winter Break!

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your family had a wonderful Winter Break!  I am looking forward to seeing the students on Monday! 

This week we will be working on the following topics:

Math:  Data Analysis

Reading:  Retelling stories--beginning, middle, ending

Writing:  informational writing

Science:  rocks and soil, land, air, and water

We will continue to work on sight words, comprehension, and fluency during our small reading groups.  I will be sending home a new sight word list on Monday.  Whenever possible, please allow your child to handle coins and practice making fair trades using coins.  I will be sending home some very basic reading and writing homework this week.  We have done a similar assignment at school, so your child should know how to complete their homework with a little help from you.

Classroom Needs:  Our snack bucket was empty when we left school for the Winter Break.  If you could send in individually wrapped snacks to help me restock the snack basket, I would greatly appreciate it.

Welcome Back

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday!  I know that I am thankful to have such a sweet, loving kindergarten class!  We are back in the routine now and things are going great here at Varner. 

This week the students wrote about how they celebrated Thanksgiving.  In math, we are working on number words and numbers 1-30. 

The Holiday Shop is open until the end of this week.  If you are interested in having your child purchase gifts, please send in specific instructions along with the money.  I will try to steer them in the right direction.

2nd Nine Weeks

Dear Parents,

Monday, Oct. 11th marked the beginning of a new nine weeks grading period.  This second nine weeks our units of study will include the following:

Social Studies:  Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Then & Now,the  Bald Eagle and Statue of Liberty

Science:  Motion/gravity, Day & Night

Health:  Five Senses

Math:  Plane and Solid Figures, Transferring & Missing Elements in patterns, Money (penny, nickel, dime and their fair trades), Numbers Greater than 10

Writing:  Narrative and Informational Stories

Reading:  Identifying all 26 letters (upper and lower case), producing all consonant sounds, recognizing 20 or more sight words, rhyming & non-rhyming words, segmenting words into syllables

***This is conference week!  Students are dismissed every day at 12:20.  Please do your best to arrive on time for your conference and I will try my best to stay on schedule.  This is a general academic conference and we are allotted 20 minutes.  If we need to talk further about problems that your child is having, we can schedule another conference.  I will be reviewing your child's assessments and giving you their report card.  We will discuss your child's strengths and weaknesses according to the GA kindergarten standards.  I look forward to meeting with each of you!

Dear Parents,

Happy Columbus Day!  Over the past week, we have discussed Christopher Columbus and his journey to the New World.  We talked about the observance of Columbus Day and how people in the United States celebrate this holiday.

Over the course of this week, I will be completing several assessments for each student.  This will help me complete the report cards for the first nine weeks of this year.  Remember that next week is Conference Week.  The students will be dismissed at 12:15.  I will write a reminder of your conference time in your child's agenda a day or two before we are scheduled to meet.  If you have any concerns or questions, please let me know so that I can address these during our conference. 

I am so excited about the growth that I have already seen in the students during the first nine weeks of school!  I am blessed to have such a wonderful class!  They are eager to learn and enthusiastic about trying new things.

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a restful and fun Fall Break!  The students were excited to get back into the routine today!  We took a few minutes this morning to share what we did over the break.  It sure sounded like everyone had a good time.

Tomorrow is our field trip to the North Georgia State Fair Petting Barns.  Please have your child wear comfortable shoes.  We will tour the petting barns, have a snack, and eat a picnic lunch at the fair.  We should be back to school by 1:00.
