Varner Update 9/28

Parents,

Just a few updates to help you out and point you in the right direction:

Administration has asked us to remind parents:

- Students may be checked out until 2:00pm. After 2:00, they will need to wait until dismissal

- All changes in how students will be going home must be called in or sent in with the student (note) before 1:45pm. The front office will not accept any changes after 1:45pm and students will be sent home they way they normally go.

-Parents of car riders, only adults that you have submitted in person to the office will be allowed to pick up your student. You must sign a legal document that verifies that you give permission for them to transport your child and they will receive a name sign.

- The principal asks that students arrive at school in "safe" shoes.

Tybee Island:

-There will be a highly important parent meeting October 4th (6:30) following the PTA meeting at Varner in the cafeteria. This will be the only meeting prior to the trip and we will give you all documents, information, and answer all questions during this time. Chaperones should attend so that they can get information and be introduced. A reminder note is being sent home today (Friday).

Testing:

-Cogat Testing went very well. Students have done awesome, and we appreciate your help in getting them here on time. We had perfect attendance both testing days this week!

One more thing...

To put it in one parent's words, "It seems that I am not smarter than a 5th grader!" Please let me know if anyone else is feeling this way about the 5th grade math when you are helping students with homework. If anyone is interested, I can arrange a relaxed meeting at school one afternoon for any parents interested in going over this years math curriculum so that you will be at a level of comfort and be able to provide examples to students when need help at home.

9/13/07

Parents & Students,

     Quick update for the week.

-$30 Tybee deposit must be in tomorrow if your student is planning to attend

-All students have a spelling test tomorrow

-Reading Group (Hiroshima) has a reading quiz tomorrow

-There is a Skating Party tonight @ 6:30 (Free if you have joined PTA)

As always, please continue to help students be responsible and organized with their work. Agendas should be signed Mon.-Thur. and all students are required to do their 25 minutes of reading nightly. Many students are off to a great start with AR and some have yet to finish a book. Please ask your son/daughter which category they fall into and help them set reading goals as needed. If you have any questions about your childs reading progress (AR testing), please contact me and I'll gladly give you the update. Thank you for your support this year. Mr. Benzin & Mrs. Powell

Message from the Principal

Parents
The service that we use to automatically notify you when the blog is updated has changed their terms of service in such a way that an ad will begin showing up at the bottom of the email that comes to you.  Your email address is still not being shared with anyone other than the school!  The mere placement of advertising in school communications is of concern to us, especially since we have no control over what the ad may be.
We are exploring other means of providing this service to you at this time.  For now, we ask your patience as we work through the concern.  In the meantime, if you receive an ad that is objectionable to you, we would appreciate your notifying the school, and holding onto it so that it may be forwarded to proper personnel.
Thank you for your patience!"

Remembrance

Today we took the time to discuss 9/11/01 with the group.  Many have pieces of the story since they were very young when it occured.  We talked about the unity that resulted from it and how many Americans view it as a day of tragedy and a day of pride for the heroics demonstrated to those that responded any way they could.  Many around the nation are paying tribute by volunteering or promising to do good deeds to honor the efforts of those on 9/11.  I've challenged the students to visit http://mygooddeed.org/ and make a contribution of their own.  They can fill out the information and list my email if you would like and then we could share their story with the class.
